Piano music for sleep: soft modern piano and how to set it up for the night

Felt piano, neo-classical and ambient piano, what makes a track sleepy, where the long sets are, and a simple setup so nothing wakes you.

An empty concert hall after closing, one grand piano under a single spotlight and rows of dark velvet seats fading into shadow.

Piano music for sleep works best when it is slow, soft and stays the same from the first note to the last. That rules out a lot of beautiful piano music, and it rules in a whole family of modern pieces made to be quiet: felt piano, neo-classical piano and ambient piano.

If you're after the classical side, Satie, Chopin and Debussy, that has its own guide: classical music for sleeping. This one is about the piano music being written and recorded now.

What makes piano music good for sleep

A piano track can be lovely and still keep you awake. These are the things I listen for:

  • Slow. The Sleep Foundation notes that most studies on music and sleep chose music at around 60 to 80 beats per minute. Momental adds that pieces at around 60 or under sit close to a resting heart rate.
  • Soft and even. No sudden loud chord, no crescendo three minutes in.
  • Space between the notes. Silent gaps give your mind room to slow down instead of following a steady stream of notes.
  • Long, held notes. With the sustain pedal down, each note fades slowly, so there is never a hard stop to notice.
  • No words. Lyrics give your brain something to follow and replay.

Momental also names what to skip: film scores with soaring builds, pieces with big emotional peaks and fast showpiece runs. Those are written to hold your attention, which is the opposite of what you want at midnight.

One thing matters more than any rule. The Sleep Foundation says there is no clear agreement on the best music for sleep, and that one of the biggest factors in how music affects you is your own taste. If a piece calms you, it belongs on your list.

The four styles of modern sleep piano

Most of the piano in sleep playlists fits one of these. They overlap, and plenty of playlists mix them, but each one has its own feel.

StyleWhat it sounds likeStart with
Felt pianoMuffled, close and very softNils Frahm, Felt
Neo-classical pianoSimple, repeating melodies, warm and a little wistfulLudovico Einaudi, Nuvole Bianche
Minimalist and ambient pianoA small pattern or a few notes, changing very slowlyArvo Pärt, Spiegel im Spiegel
Lofi pianoSoft keys over a slow beat and vinyl crackleA lofi sleep playlist

Felt piano

Felt piano is the softest of the four. The best-known example is Nils Frahm's album Felt, released on Erased Tapes in 2011. Textura's review explains how: he layered thick felt in front of the strings out of consideration for his neighbours, recorded late at night, and put the microphones so deep inside the piano they were almost touching the strings.

The result sounds close and hushed, as if the piano is in the room and someone is playing it carefully so as not to wake you. When a sleep playlist or video says felt piano, this is the sound it means.

Neo-classical piano

Ludovico Einaudi is the name most people know here. When the Official Charts Company ranked his most streamed songs in the UK in 2019, Nuvole Bianche, from his 2004 album Una Mattina, came top with 20.5 million UK plays. Classical Music magazine says its repeating motifs and emotive simplicity create a blissfully meditative state.

Neo-classical piano is melodic, so it is easy to love and easy to start. Play each piece once during the day before you add it to a night playlist, and leave out any that swell into a big finish.

Minimalist and ambient piano

Minimalist piano repeats a small pattern and changes it slowly. Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel, from 1978, is the classic example. Classical Music magazine says its repetitive patterns create a hypnotic, reflective mood. It was written for piano and violin, so it is a gentle step away from solo piano.

Ambient piano goes further: a few notes at a time, long fades and lots of space, often over a soft pad. It suits long overnight sets because nothing in it pulls you back up. I've covered the wider ambient world in ambient sleep music.

If you want one piece that lasts the whole night, Max Richter's Sleep runs for 8.5 hours. It's in the classical guide linked above.

Lofi piano

Lofi piano puts soft keys over a slow beat, tape hiss and vinyl crackle. Momental's note on it is fair: lofi beats are relaxed pre-sleep listening, but the beat can keep you engaged. So it suits the hour before bed more than the middle of the night. There's more on that in lofi for sleeping.

Where to listen to piano music for sleep

All four of these have soft piano ready to play. They differ in how long the music runs and what might interrupt it.

YouTube

YouTube is where the very long sets are. Soothing Relaxation, a channel with 12.1 million subscribers, has an 8 Hours of Beautiful Piano Music video that runs for 8 hours and 2 minutes. Its Relaxing Piano Music video has more than 215 million views.

The catch overnight is ads. YouTube lets creators turn on ads in the middle of monetised videos that are 8 minutes or longer, so an 8-hour video can have ad breaks while you sleep. YouTube Premium removes them.

YouTube also has a sleep timer. In the player, tap the Settings icon, tap Sleep timer and choose how long the video should play before it pauses.

Spotify

Spotify's own Peaceful Piano playlist is a good place to start. It has 150 tracks and nearly 8 million saves, and Spotify describes it as peaceful piano to help you slow down, breathe and relax.

Spotify's sleep timer is in the three-dot menu on the Now Playing screen. You can pick 5, 10, 15, 30 or 45 minutes, 1 hour, or the end of the current track.

Apple Music

Apple Music Classical's Piano Sleep playlist has 108 tracks running about 5 hours 19 minutes. It mixes Ludovico Einaudi with pianists like Víkingur Ólafsson, Olivia Belli, Roger Eno and Snorri Hallgrímsson, so it's a good way to find new names in this style. Apple updates it regularly.

On an iPhone, the Clock app can stop the music for you. Set a timer, tap When Timer Ends, tap Stop Playing at the bottom of the list, then tap Set and Start.

Calm

Calm is a meditation and sleep app, with sleep music alongside its Sleep Stories and soundscapes. Its sleep music includes a classical playlist built from piano-led arrangements with orchestral harmonies.

For modern solo piano, Calm's guide to sleep music names Natalie Holmes, Fougère and Jeremiah Fraites among its favourite composers of peaceful, lyric-free piano. It suits you if you like a guided wind-down before the music takes over.

How to set up piano music for the night

A good setup matters as much as the music. Here is a simple one to start from:

  1. Pick one style and keep it for a week. In one study the Sleep Foundation describes, adults who listened to 45 minutes of music before sleep reported better sleep quality from the very first night, and the more often they listened, the better they slept.
  2. Play about 45 minutes as you get into bed. A playlist of that length is easy to build from any of the four places above.
  3. Set a timer. Momental suggests 30 to 45 minutes so the music fades out on its own. If you like having sound there when you wake in the night, play a long set instead.
  4. Keep the volume low and use a speaker. The Sleep Foundation warns that headphones and earbuds can damage the ear canal at high volume while you sleep, and suggests a small speaker near the bed.
  5. Remove anything that could interrupt it. Download the playlist if your app allows it, so a weak signal can't cut it off, and use an ad-free option for long videos.
  6. Swap out anything that holds your attention. If a melody keeps you listening, move to something steadier, like ambient piano.

Make piano sleep videos for YouTube with Chillframe

Many of the long piano videos above come from faceless channels: soft music, a calm picture and no one on camera. The view counts show how big this audience is, and you don't need to be a pianist or an editor to reach it. My guide to sleep music on YouTube covers the creator side in more depth.

The Chillframe homepage

Chillframe makes the original music, the picture and the finished video, and publishes it to your YouTube channel. The four styles above give a piano channel an easy shape: a Series for each, so every style keeps its own scene and its own nights. Describe each scene and its piano in plain words, or start from a preset, and leave the audio on Instrumental so there are no words to follow. A week could look like this:

  • Felt piano, Monday to Thursday at 10pm, over a scene like Cozy Window: a sunlit window seat with slow, close solo piano and long quiet between phrases.
  • Neo-classical piano on Fridays, described as a grand piano in a dark concert hall.
  • Minimalist and ambient piano on Saturdays, over Moonlit Ridge, one distant piano note fading over a soft drone.
  • Lofi piano on Sundays.

Each Series automatically makes a fresh video for every slot and posts it with an optimised title, description and tags. Its first video is held for you to approve. With auto-publish on, that's the last thing you do, and from there it runs fully hands-off.

The thing to plan around is length. Every plan makes videos up to 1 hour, not the 8-hour sets above. An hour covers the 45 minutes of music this guide suggests before sleep, and for an all-night upload you can join several hours together in an editor first.

One Series runs on the Starter plan at $19 a month. All four styles at once is more than the Creator plan's three, so that layout needs the Pro plan, at $99 a month with unlimited Series.

Piano music for sleep FAQ

What is the best piano music for sleep?

Anything slow, soft and steady with no words. Good places to start are Nils Frahm's album Felt, Ludovico Einaudi's Nuvole Bianche and Spotify's Peaceful Piano playlist. After that, trust your own ears: the Sleep Foundation says your own musical taste is one of the biggest factors in how music affects you.

How long should I listen to piano music before bed?

Start with about 45 minutes. That is how long the adults in one study the Sleep Foundation describes listened before sleep, and they reported better sleep quality. A sleep timer set to 30 to 45 minutes lets the music fade out on its own.

Is it OK to play piano music all night?

Yes, if the volume is low and the sound comes from a small speaker near the bed rather than earbuds. The Sleep Foundation warns that headphones and earbuds can damage the ear canal at high volume while you sleep. An 8-hour video or a long playlist keeps the music going until morning.

What is felt piano?

A piano played with a layer of felt in front of the strings, which makes every note softer and more muffled. The best-known example is Nils Frahm's 2011 album Felt, which he recorded late at night with the felt in place out of consideration for his neighbours.

Is lofi piano good for sleep?

It is good for winding down. Soft keys over a slow beat suit the hour before bed, but the beat can keep some people listening. If it does, switch to solo piano or ambient piano once the lights are off.
