Step 1
Pick a rain: light, heavy, or on a roof, a window or a tent.
Free rain sounds for sleeping: five kinds of rain, distant thunder, a sleep timer and a black screen.
Pick a rain: light, heavy, or on a roof, a window or a tent.
Press Play and set the volume. Turn on Thunder for a storm.
Turn on Sleep timer to fade it out, or press Black screen to darken the page.
Light rain is a soft, steady patter. Heavy rain falls hard and even. Rain on a roof drums on tin, rain on a window taps on the glass, and rain on a tent drums close by on the fabric.
Thunder is its own layer with its own volume, so you can keep it low or turn it up. Switch it on with any of the five rains.
Each sound is a 22-second loop that repeats with no gap, its end blended into its start so you don't hear a click. All of them are matched for loudness, so the volume stays even when you switch.
People play rain to cover other sounds: traffic, a neighbor's television, a partner who snores.
The research is thinner than its popularity. A 2021 review of 38 studies rated the evidence that continuous noise improves sleep as very low quality. So treat rain as a sound you like falling asleep to, and keep the volume low.
The Sleep timer stops the rain after 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour or 2 hours, fading out over the last 30 seconds so it doesn't cut off. Leave it off and the rain plays until you press Stop.
Black screen covers the page in black so a phone or laptop by the bed doesn't light up the room. Tap it, or press Enter or Esc, to close it. Phones treat a locked screen differently, so if yours stops the sound when it locks, leave the screen on with Black screen instead.
Rain is one of the biggest searches in the sleep space. In the US, Google's Keyword Planner shows about 74,000 searches a month for rain sounds and 22,200 for thunderstorm sounds, and long rain videos are a format of their own.
That makes rain a good place to start a channel. Chillframe makes the music, the visual and the finished video for your music channel, and publishes it to YouTube on the days you pick.
