Sleep Sounds Mixer

A free online sound machine for sleep: mix ocean waves, rain, a fan, a fire and noise, with a sleep timer that fades out.

How to use it.

Step 1

Tap the sounds you want in your mix.

Step 2

Press Play, then set each sound's level and the main volume.

Step 3

Turn on Sleep timer to fade the mix out, or press Black screen.

The sounds in the mixer

There are 15 sounds in four groups. Nature has ocean waves, a river, forest birds, night crickets and wind. Rain has light rain, heavy rain and a thunderstorm. Indoors has a fan, a fireplace and a cafe. Noise has white, pink, brown and green noise.

The fan and the four noises are made in your browser when you press Play, so they start at once. The other 10 are 22-second sound loops that load the first time you pick them. Each loop has its end blended into its start, so it repeats with no gap, and every sound is matched for loudness, so adding one doesn't drown out the rest.

Each sound in your mix gets its own slider under Your mix, and the main Volume sets the whole mix. New sounds fade in and removed ones fade out, so nothing jumps.

An online sound machine

This page works as a sound machine on the phone or laptop you already have. You build your own mix and change it any time, where a plug-in machine plays one sound at a time from its built-in list and a sleep video plays one fixed mix.

It is a common search. In the US, Google's Keyword Planner shows about 27,100 searches a month for sound machine and 22,200 for sound machine for sleep. A plug-in machine still suits you if you'd rather not keep a phone by the bed. Whichever you use, keep it quiet.

That matters most for babies. A 2014 study in Pediatrics measured 14 infant sleep machines at full volume, and every one was louder than 50 dBA at 30 cm, the limit recommended for hospital nurseries. Keep the volume down and the speaker away from the crib.

Fan noise for sleeping

The fan here is made from noise filtered to keep the low whoosh and cut the hiss, with a little low rumble and a gentle pulse in level, like blades turning. It plays as a 10-second loop with its end blended into its start.

Fan noise is one of the biggest sleep searches, with about 49,500 US searches a month for fan noise and 27,100 for fan noise for sleeping. Pair it with ocean waves or rain if a fan alone feels too plain.

Ocean and nature sounds

Ocean waves mix well with almost anything. Try them with a fan underneath, or try heavy rain with a fireplace, or a river with night crickets. Keep one sound loud and the others low, and the mix sounds like one place.

Ocean sounds get about 27,100 searches a month in the US, and nature sounds for sleep about 6,600.

Sleep sound videos on YouTube

Long ocean, rain and fan videos are a format of their own on YouTube, and sleep sounds get about 33,100 US searches a month.
